Our first Sunday saw us undertake a along road trip to the north-east of the island. Three cars, consisting of two of my cousins and their families, an aunt, my folks, and my brother’s family wound along the highway, visiting various “miradouros” or look-out points. We reach a place known as Bridal Veil falls complete with an old water mill and cafe. We spent some time there, looking at the falls, wandering the mill grounds, and having grabbing a beer at the cafe (yes, Portugal has no hangups about adults buying beer and wine in a cafe). We continued on, taking in the vistas of valleys and sea, and also doing a brief stop at the Miradouro da Despe – which has a really nice pic-nic area under beautiful shade. Dinner time rolled around and we found ourselves in Tronqueira – and it took a little bit of time to find a restaurant that was open, but we found one. We sat down, started with bread, cheese, and wine, and continued to the main dishes. I had a regional steak with the traditional fried egg on the top. It was really good, and I had the opportunity to try bites of other things that were ordered. Everything at the table was delicious. We did a slow exit from the restaurant as the ladies took their time in the washroom, and the men decided to pull out a soccerball and just kick it around. Three generations of men and women kicked that ball around. A rare moment indeed – but a great one!
